It was the first night of the biggest trip of the year. I remember getting off the bus, and you followed right behind me, laughing at something stupid I had just said. Everybody helped unload all the suitcases from the bus, and our director told us to go straight to our hotel rooms to go to bed because it was late. The next day would be a long one. We scurried into the hotel lobby, trying to escape the cold. The scent of it was of the ocean because of the saltwater fountain, and lavender, which came from the hundreds of candles stocked in the lobby.
Of course, nobody went straight to the hotel rooms. We all started catching up on the latest gossip, since they divided us into three different buses. I went to talk to my friends, and lost sight of you. I remember somebody was going to ask another girl to be his girlfriend, and I wished it was you coming to me.
Soon, our director started to shoo everyone to the elevators and stairs. Girls were to take the elevator and boys were to take the stairs. Why? I don’t know. It’s not like there was enough time to do dirty work in a five second elevator ride, but I’ll never know his reasoning. I laughed to myself as I remember what my friend had said: It’s called a quicky, duh! I began to gather all my bags and headed towards the elevator.
And then I felt a poke on my shoulder. I turned around, and there you were standing before me. A smile quickly grew on my face. I started to question why you hadn’t left yet, but then you said one simple word.
“Goodnight,” with a smile.
“You too,” I replied.
Just the simple exchange of words left me falling asleep in a good mood. Had you not left just to say goodnight to me? Maybe, maybe. I don’t think you’ll ever know, but that made my day. I keep it in my box of memories, stored in the back of my mind for when I’m down, or I just need a let up. One day, I hope to tell you about this box. But it won’t be anytime soon.
